RHRC-In just three days, the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar have faced deadly lightning, destructive storms, and a brutal murder. These back-to-back tragedies show the daily risks and severe suffering of a vulnerable community
One dead, five injured as thunderstorm turns deadly.
On the evening of 1 June 2025, tragedy struck Camp-20 in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. A severe thunderstorm brought deadly lightning, which killed one Rohingya man and left five others injured. The storm, which brought intense rain and thunder, caught many by surprise as people prepared for the evening prayer.
As heavy rain and dangerous thunderstorms continue to intensify, we urge everyone to stay cautious and seek shelter in safe, secure locations. Authorities and humanitarian groups are calling for improved shelter conditions and safer infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
Heavy rain, landslides, and fallen trees leave dozens without shelter.
On 30 May 2025, BlockA-1 of Camp- 07 witnessed ruinous destruction as heavy thunderstorm rains swept through the area. Makeshift shelters made of bamboo and tarpaulin were torn piecemeal by strong winds and landslides. Trees that formerly offered shade and comfort were pulled, crashing into homes and roads.
Dozens of families were left without shelter, food, or protection from the elements. As one resident shared, “These are not just weather disasters. These are human tragedies that crush the little hope we hold onto every single day.”
Camp residents are calling on the transnational community and fellow Muslims around the world for prayers and support during these painful days.
Refugee stabbed to death near CIC office as lawlessness grows.
On 31 May 2025, a horrifying murder occurred in front of the Camp-11 CIC office. A man, reportedly an MV (Mahji Volunteer), was riding in a CNG auto-rickshaw with his elderly mother and two other passengers. As they arrived near the CIC office, the two other passengers turned violent, attempting to rob him. When they failed, they stabbed him multiple times, killing him on the spot.
Worse still, when witnesses rushed to report the incident to APBN, officers allegedly refused to respond. The identity of the victim remains unknown. Residents are outraged and fearful, asking: “Where is the protection? What does your so-called security mean to Rohingya?”
These back-to-back tragedies, a lightning strike, a destructive storm, and a broad daylight murder highlight the deep vulnerabilities and urgent need for justice, protection, and dignity for the Rohingya people.
